Plastic Bag Recycling
While Plastic Bags and flexible plastic films are fully recyclable and a highly sought after commodity, many Municipal Recycling Programs choose to reject these materials. The sorting and processing equipment utilized at many Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) are not compatible for the material handling of plastic bags and flexible plastic films since the bags wind around the sorting equipment and clog-up the process flow.
As a result of Municipal Recycling Programs refusing to accept plastic bags a common false misbelief that plastic bags are not recyclable has been perpetuated.

Small Plastic Items
Items such as plastic drinking straws, plastic bottle caps and numerous other plastic items are grouped together and classed as undersized based on their screening size. While the plastics contained in these small items are recyclable and a highly sought after commodity, many Municipal Recycling Programs choose to reject these materials. The equipment utilized at many Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) are not compatible for the material handling of small plastic items and smalls and they are typically screened out in order to be able to sort container sized bottles in the process flow.
As a result of Municipal Recycling Programs refusing to accept these small plastic items a common false misbelief that these plastics are not recyclable has been perpetuated.

MRF Plastics Processing
Municipal Recycling Programs that refuse or reject Plastic Bags and Small Plastic Items from the pool of recovered materials, substantially reduce the potential overall recovery rates.
If Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) are designed to eliminate large fractions of the available plastic wastes, this will impact up to 1% of the total wastestream.
